Point's 2018 National Leadership Conference

Anytime the Point family gets together there’s magic. Gather 200 scholars, alumni, board members, and staff together at Disney World in Orlando for Point’s 2018 National Leadership Conference (NLC), and there’s no question where the happiest place on Earth is.

Even being in the environs of the Magic Kingdom, Point Scholars and Alumni eagerly participated in sessions on public speaking, financial planning, developing community service projects, alumni engagement, and a special leadership workshop conducted by the Disney Institute. Point is grateful to its board members who helped lead sessions at the NLC. We asked some of them to reflect on the experience – read what they said on our NLC webpage

A highlight of each NLC is the Friday night Leadership Dinner.

Inspired by the NLC, many in the Point family left Orlando eager to carry the energy and enthusiasm forward. Point Scholar Shannon Moran shares some ideas for continued advocacy on our ViewPoint blog.

Remembering Casey Hokespacer white

The Point family will always remember scholar Casey Hoke, who passed away in August. Casey brought warmth and love to every space he was in, and he is sorely missed. Casey’s Point community service project, www.QueerArtHistory.com  remains online as a tribute to his commitment to bringing visibility to LGBTQIA+ people.

What a Night! Point Honors Los Angeles
Photos from Point Honors Los Angelesspacer white

More than 400 guests and celebrities filled the Beverly Hilton Hotel October 13 for Point Honors Los Angeles 2018. Highlights of the evening included the presentation of the Point Impact Award to actor Eric McCormack and the Point Horizon Award to writer and producer Steven Canals. Not only did Point exceed its $400,000 fundraising goal, but the evening also featured an announcement that Creative Artists Agency (CAA) would begin underwriting a new Point Foundation Scholarship in 2019. Comedian Solomon Georgio hosted the festive gala and recording star Leona Lewis brought the house down with a multi-song set.

Collage of photos from the Community College Transfer Symposium spacer white

Point brought the 25 recipients of its 2018 Community College Scholarship to Los Angeles in early September for a two day symposium focusing on how to transfer to four-year degree programs. The students, attending schools in 22 cities across the U.S., took part in workshops focusing on the college transfer process, financial literacy, essay writing, resume preparation, as well as wellness and self-care.

Point Alumni were among the facilitators leading sessions, along with college deans, admissions advisors, and Point staff. Point Alumni are encouraged to volunteer as transfer coaches to help our community college students in the new academic year. Contact Alumni & Mentor Manager Zachary Lundin for more information.

Thank you to the sponsors that made the 2018 Transfer Symposium possible: Sponsors: Wells FargoThe California Endowment, and digital publication INTO.

Rewriting the Story for LGBTQ Students

Any time an LGBTQ student in need finds the help and resources to go to college is a reason to celebrate. But, according to Point Executive Director Jorge Valencia, it’s time to make these happy endings the rule, not the exception. As we gear up for the November 1 opening of the application period for 2019 - 2020 Point scholarships, read Jorge’s essay on our ViewPoint blog.
